How to foster and adopt

Why Foster?

As a foster based rescue, we cannot take in rescues unless we have a foster willing to take them in. We work all over the US and we are always in need of knowledgeable fosters in all areas. Fostering a Sphynx in need provides a unique opportunity to help a cat in desperate need of a loving, knowledgeable home while they are evaluated, have health or behavioral issues addressed to begin their new journey in live. The majority of our rescues are surrendered due to health or behavioral issues and they need a home with a patience and love that they wouldn't get otherwise. If you are interested in fostering, please fill out our Foster Interest Form or email us if you have questions SphynxRescue@gmail.com

Why Adopt?

There is a very common misconception that a rescue Sphynx can be a way to obtain a "cheap" or "low cost" option for people who don't think they can afford a Sphynx. At SOAR, we do everything we can to ensure every adopter knows not only the joy of owning a Sphynx but what can come along with that. Very few people surrender a Sphynx for no good reason. Most of our rescues have been dumped due to health or behavioral issues and many of those are unforeseen issues until we get our cats into foster care. Sphynx from a reputable breeder have a contract that stipulates their cats go back to them before they are given/sold or placed at a shelter so we do not get the "cream of the crop" so to speak, in the genetics world with our rescues. Due to poor breeding practices, the Sphynx breed can be very unhealthy in the respect of upper respiratory issues, heart disease (specifically Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy) and GI issues. Many of our cats suffer from one or all of these issues and they can be very expensive to care for during the remainder of their life. We do our best to evaluate our rescues health, including heart health, before adoption so any adopters can be aware of exactly what they are taking on. This is much more than you find from anyone rehoming a Sphynx on Craigslist or any other internet sales/rehoming site. You can rest assured that any of our cats will be fully evaluated and there will be no hidden issues at the time of adoption. Our cats come with any and all information we know about the cat, they will be in a stable state of health, dental's done if needed, vaccinations if needed, altered, microchiped and ready for their forever loving home! Please see our available cats page for cats who are looking for their forever home or a foster to adopt home. Please read the ENTIRE post before applying and please be respectful of the requirements we ask of the home looking to adopt. We have reasons for things like not wanting to place a cat in a home with no other animals or a home close to where they are located. We will gladly discuss why we have these requirements but please do not tell us the cat will be OK in something different than what we have listed for them. We spend many months with our cats and we know what will suit them best. Many of our cats don't come from the best backgrounds so they need a home that can cater to their needs and spoil them forever. If you think you might be a good match for one of our cats, please submit an application to sphynxrescue@gmail.com or send us an email if you have more questions.
